Understanding QR Code Technology

QR codes use two-dimensional matrix patterns to store data that can be quickly scanned by cameras. Learn how they work and why they're so effective.

What is a QR Code?

Quick Response (QR) codes are two-dimensional barcodes invented by Denso Wave in 1994 for tracking automotive parts. Unlike traditional 1D barcodes, QR codes can store up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters and be scanned from any angle at high speed—hence the name "Quick Response."

  • ✓ Stores text, URLs, WiFi, contacts
  • ✓ Fast 360° scanning capability
  • ✓ Error correction up to 30%

Error Correction Levels

QR codes use Reed-Solomon error correction, allowing them to be readable even when partially damaged or dirty. Higher correction levels (L, M, Q, H) increase reliability but make the code denser. Level H can recover up to 30% damaged data.

  • • L (7%): Basic error recovery
  • • M (15%): Standard for most uses
  • • Q (25%): Good for industrial use
  • • H (30%): Maximum damage tolerance

Data Capacity

QR codes can store varying amounts of data depending on the character type. Numeric data (0-9) packs most efficiently at 4,296 characters, while mixed alphanumeric allows 2,953 characters. Binary data (images/files) stores up to 2,953 bytes.

  • • Numeric: 4,296 characters max
  • • Alphanumeric: 2,953 characters
  • • Binary/Kanji: 2,953 bytes

Scanning Technology

Modern smartphones use camera sensors and image processing algorithms to detect QR code positioning markers (the three squares in corners), align the grid, and decode the matrix pattern. Most phones have built-in QR scanning in the camera app.

  • ✓ Native iOS/Android support
  • ✓ No special app required
  • ✓ Works with any camera

WiFi QR Codes

WiFi QR codes encode network credentials (SSID, password, security type) in a special format. When scanned, devices automatically connect to the network without manual password entry—perfect for guest access and shared spaces like cafes.

  • • SSID and password encoded
  • • One-tap network connection
  • • WPA/WPA2/WEP support

vCard QR Codes

vCard (Virtual Contact File) QR codes store contact information in standardized format—name, phone, email, address, company, etc. Scanning instantly adds the contact to your phone without typing, ideal for business cards and networking.

  • • Complete contact details
  • • Direct phone book import
  • • Universal vCard 3.0 format
